Vice President, Philanthropy and Community Engagement

Community HousingWorks is seeking a successful Philanthropy and Community Engagement leader in San Diego. The right person will feel at home growing and changing along with CHW – an entrepreneurial affordable housing and services nonprofit that every year grows our apartments, our residents served and our services.

Reporting to the President & CEO, the Vice President, Philanthropy and Community Engagement (VP) serves as a key Leadership Team member and an active participant in making strategic fund development and outward-facing communications decisions affecting Community HousingWorks (CHW) philanthropic presence and goals. In partnership with the CEO, this position is responsible for all fundraising and development activities, and forging new relationships to build CHW's visibility, impact, and financial resources. The VP also designs and implements a comprehensive plan for developing key external alliances by cultivating individual and philanthropic support.

The Vice President, Philanthropy and Community Engagement is primarily responsible for establishing and implementing the infrastructure needed to grow a $2.6M budget through the solicitation of principal and major gifts, federal and state grants, special events, and corporate and foundation support. They expand and diversify CHW's donor base/pipeline and work closely with other team members to secure funding for new initiatives. In addition, the VP works closely with the board of directors and supports board members as they take on a more active fundraising role. It is expected that the amount raised by CHW will increase in future years as the VP systematically and effectively builds new supportive relationships and partnerships, and strengthens the organization's overall fundraising capacity.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

Knowledge and experience in the following areas is required: the art and science of philanthropy and the four distinct phases of a donor cycle, standard fundraising techniques including face-to-face solicitation, proposal writing, special events, telephone solicitation, and direct mail, and development office functions including gift processing and acknowledgement, prospect and donor profiles and histories, database implementation and fundraising reporting. The individual is also expected to have demonstrated experience and confidence in asking people to contribute time and money. Familiarity with computer systems, including CRM databases, is necessary.

Strategy

Develop a donor identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship program for the organization while maintaining a personal portfolio of major donor prospects and confirmed donors.

Keeps informed of developments in philanthropy and fund development as well as the general fields of management and the nonprofit sector; informs the CEO, Fund Development Committee and Board on current trends, issues, and activities in order to facilitate policy making. Recommends policy positions concerning fund development.

Develop and oversee strategy for a diversified Fund Development portfolio, including events, philanthropy, one-time campaign initiatives, direct mail, and annual-giving.

Develop specific and measurable short, mid and long-term plans and programs to achieve CHW's strategic plan framework and objectives, in collaboration within the Advancement team and across the organization.

Lead and contribute to the management and growth of a pipeline of new and active donors, sponsors, and partners at a scale commensurate with current and future revenue targets.

Oversee research on funding sources and trends, with foresight, to help position CHW ahead of major funding changes or trends.

Identify key strategic issues, social or political developments, and emerging trends that may be opportunities or threats, provincially and nationally, and recommend and implement responses.

Governance and Support

As part of the Leadership Team, provide information to the Board of Directors about the Fund Development activities and overall portfolio through reports and presentations, and attend meetings as required.

Ensures that philanthropy and fund development are aligned and carried out in keeping with the organization's 5-year strategic plan, as well as its values, mission, and vision.

Work with the Board of Directors and CEO to leverage their networks to identify and cultivate would-be donors, sponsors, and partners.

Attend Board meetings as required.

Contribute quarterly to the CEO's report to the Board.

Ensure organizational compliance with policies and legislation relating to governance, human resources, health and safety, privacy, gift acceptance, as well as best practices for data integrity.

Leadership

Advice Leadership Team and the Board on a highly-researched and developed growth strategy for the organization's fund development efforts.

Act as the primary relationship manager for the organization's top donors and benefactors, and act as the subject matter expert for the philanthropy fundraising stream.

Provide vision, and model and implement approaches that embed and maintain a culture of philanthropy with staff and volunteers.

Lead the Advancement Team in their efforts to achieve targets and OKRs for all fundraising streams by providing strategic support, problem-solving, and rigor in activity review and ensuring staff have the resources needed to succeed.

Manage, support and lead a team of 3 direct reports and support an additional 2 indirect report(s) in their Fund Development-related activities.

Contribute to the growth of the Advancement Team through mentorship, coaching, sharing of fundraising best practices, and achieving event excellence.

Support the Achieve Onsite team in community fundraising by providing mentorship and guidance, and helping to identify opportunities to increase fundraising and volunteerism at and for individual properties in the organization's portfolio.

Represent CHW on Fund Development committees of fundraising partners as required.

Represent CHW at conferences and event to increase the visibility of the organization.

Management & Administration

Develop and implement policies and procedures designed to execute the strategy-based programs and initiatives of the Advancement Team.

Ensure a high-degree of donor and institutional funder engagement through consistent and personalized contact and communications.

Set Objectives and Key Results (OKRs) and monitor performance of all Fund Development portfolios and recommend improvements accordingly.

Oversee activities relating to the database (Salesforce/Raisers Edge), including donation processing, financial reconciliation, and recommending improvements as required, championing a data driven culture within the organization.

In collaboration with and supported by marketing & communications, set the organization's digital fundraising objectives, ensure revenue generation from online channels is optimized, and leverage emerging technologies to support revenue goals.

Provide vision and direction to the creation of fundraising and impact messages aligned with the organization's brand positioning to reinforce the organization's case for support with key audiences.

Develop and implement marketing strategies and public awareness initiatives designed to increase the profile and presence of the organization to attract interest in supporting its ongoing and one-time activities.

Finance

Develop and manage a department budget of $1.2 million and a target revenue budget of $2.6 million to support CHW's strategic plan and Achieve's Resident Services.

Plan annual revenue and expense budgets for Fund Development, and secure Board approval for fundraising plans.

Oversee and approve the review of monthly staff team expenses.

Support Finance with the forecast of the annual organizational budget.

Review monthly financial statements and identify trends, challenges and opportunities

Education and Experience:

10-plus years of professional experience in a nonprofit organization and/or real estate-focused entity; demonstrated success in a development function (managing and forging relationships with multiple donor sources).

Membership in a professional fundraising association is expected. Baseline certification in fund raising, the CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Professional), is preferred.

Tangible experience of having expanded and cultivated existing donor relationships over time.

Excellent communication skills, both written and oral; ability to influence and engage a wide range of donors, benefactors and partners, and build long-term relationships.

Expert level with CRM Databases (Salesforce, Raiser's Edge).

Strong organizational skills.

Flexible and adaptable style; a leader who can positively impact both strategic and tactical fundraising initiatives.

Ability to work independently without close oversight, and as a team player who will productively engage with others at varying levels of seniority within and outside CHW.

Bachelor's degree required, graduate-level degree preferred.

High energy and passion for CHW's mission is essential.

Ability to construct, articulate, and implement an annual strategic development plan.

Strong organizational and time management skills with exceptional attention to detail.
