DEPARTMENT/PROGRAM SUMMARY
This position is supported by a USDA NIFA NEXTGEN grant aimed at strengthening and expanding the Agriculture Plant and Soil Science (AGPS) program at California State University, Monterey Bay (CSUMB), a Hispanic Serving institution, by leveraging learning communities and building social capital to attract, train, retain, engage, graduate, and guide Hispanic, first-generation, and low-income students into careers in the agricultural industry and USDA. The program supports high-impact multidisciplinary experiential learning opportunities and provides financial support, career development, and just-in-time inclusive mentoring to its participants to leverage recruitment, upskilling, and preparation of a future-ready food and agricultural workforce. The AGPS NEXTGEN program plans delivers, and assesses initiatives and services that support the recruitment, enrollment, retention, and graduation of AGPS students, including fostering the AGPS cohort-based learning model as the key to student retention and success. Moreover, the AGPS NEXTGEN program seeks to improve scientific identity and technical, leadership, and employability skills among AGPS students, supporting career-focused experiential learning opportunities, Course-based Undergraduate Research Experiences, and agricultural problem-solving Service Learning. Student recruitment will be centered around community outreach and networking, fostering partnerships with regional community colleges and high schools, and developing clear and cohesive academic pathways, while supporting students at critical transitions.

POSITION SUMMARY
Under the general direction of the Principal Investigator, the AGPS Academic Success and Career Development Coordinator (ASCD) participates in the development, coordination, and implementation of recruitment, preparation, and retention initiatives to ensure prospective, incoming, and current AGPS students successfully enroll and persist in college. The ASCD will be responsible for implementing and overseeing the recruitment, preparation, and retention of students in the AGPS program, as well as community building, professional development, and outreach efforts. The ASCD will oversee student coaching and mentoring, develop and run workshops on college preparedness, educational opportunities and career opportunities, financial aid/literacy, and wellness, and conduct student outreach. The ASCD will work closely with the Principal Investigator and AGPS faculty, and collaborate with several different units on campus, including the Undergraduate Research Opportunity Center, the Center for Advising, Career, and Student Success, the financial aid office, COS Science Internship Program, the Transfer Student Success Center, TRIO program, and El Centro. The ASCD will also provide administrative services and logistical support for the project.

Examples of Duties

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include, but are not limited to. the following:
45% - Student Engagement, Coaching, and Mentoring

  • Conducts outreach to currently enrolled AGPS students.
  • Uses an asset-based approach to develop and implement culturally relevant and student-centered services, programs, and strategies offered by the NEXTGEN program or campus partner organizations focusing on students who are the first in their families to attend college, come from historically low-income backgrounds and under-resourced schools and communities.
  • Plans, oversees, and coordinates efforts to ensure the awareness and participation of AGPS students in in-person, virtual, and evening services, events, and workshops focusing on topics such as social and cultural capital, campus resources, balancing work and school, mental health and student wellness.
  • Coordinate and administer new student orientation, professional development and mentoring training workshops, and other activities to support student success.
  • Collaborates with campus partners to advocate for and develop programs that provide holistic support and address the specific needs of AGPS students.
  • Oversees in conjunction with the Financial Aid office the submission and evaluation of NEXTGEN scholarship materials.
  • Hosts application support drop-in sessions for students applying to NEXTGEN and other AGPS-relevant scholarships.
  • Provides students with information about educational opportunities, financial aid/literacy, career exploration, motivation, and self-awareness through workshops, advising, and classroom presentations.
  • Remains current on trends and best practices dealing with student retention and tracking.
  • Meets with AGPS students individually and in groups to evaluate progress and provide guidance relating to student life and academic progress, including supporting and building a sense of belonging among incoming students, particularly non-traditional students, as they transition to CSUMB.
  • Coordinates and executes focus group and exit interviews with AGPS students to obtain factual and interpretative information and assess the impact of current practices and identify and problem-solve barriers to student success.
  • Maintains current, accurate and confidential program files, databases and student records to track all aspects of admissions, student support, scholarships, assignments, academic progress, degrees awarded, and alumni network tracking.


45% - Student Recruitment and Outreach
  • Identifies and coordinate recruitment and outreach opportunities targeting prospective students from local high schools and state community colleges, including campus visits.
  • Provides support and guidance to prospective AGPS students about the application process, admissions requirements (both Four-year and transfer pathways) and opportunities
  • Assists applicants in conjunction with the Admissions and Financial Aid offices to prepare, collect, organize, and submit application and scholarship materials.
  • Follows up with prospective AGPS students (e.g. calls, e-mails, social media) to identify and problem-solve barriers to application submission and matriculation and offer resources to students.
  • Collaborates with academic advisors from state community colleges to gather curriculum information, identify comparable courses or elective alternatives, and streamline the process of formalizing transfer agreements with the AGPS program.
  • Coordinates and leads the development and dissemination of culturally appropriate and accessible marketing, outreach, and recruitment materials and events using social media, videos, flyers, websites, and email.

10% - Other Duties As Assigned
  • Provides support to the NEXTGEN Principal Investigator and Experiential Learning and Community Partnership Coordinator (ELCP) for special projects.
  • Performs other job-related duties to support assignments and implementation of long-range program improvements, collecting, compiling, analyzing, and evaluating data and preparing oral or written presentations based on program data.
  • Attends all regularly scheduled professional staff meetings including but not limited to unit team meetings, meetings with the Principal Investigator, Campus Stakeholder meetings, and strategic project and initiatives working groups.
  • Maintains active communication with the Advisory and Stakeholder Committee, including organizing the project strategic meetings.
  • Supports internal-external evaluation efforts.
  • Regularly participates in ongoing professional development opportunities including workshops, conferences, and webinars.
  • Reviews relevant literature to remain current on emerging trends and issues in higher education.
  • Assists in coordinating and participating in summer internship bootcamp by supporting program/workshop development, and recruitment, enrolment, and onboarding of students.
  • Assists with data management, surveys, and program evaluation.
  • Promotes and maintains an atmosphere of excellent internal and external customer service.

Qualifications

Education and Experience:

  • Equivalent to graduation from a four-year college or university in Food, Agriculture, Natural and Human (FANH) sciences, education, student support services, or related fields and/or equivalent specialized experience / training during which the applicant has acquired and successfully applied the knowledge and abilities shown above.
  • Experience working with a diverse student population and/or student success programs.

The annual hiring range for this position is $68,000-$74,034. Classification: Grade 5, Staff.
