This position will work a hybrid schedule which includes a combination of working both onsite at La Jolla, CA and remote.


DESCRIPTION


The Department of Medicine (DOM) is the largest department within the UC San Diego School of Medicine (SOM) and is responsible for fulfilling its teaching, research, and clinical missions. DOM employs approximately 500 salaried faculty, nearly 200 academic appointees, and more than 300 residents, fellows, and postdocs, supported by almost 1,000 staff members. The Business Services Office (BSO) functions within DOM Administration and interfaces with data and individuals throughout the Department, SOM, campus, and Health System, regarding financial and operational matters.

Financial Analyst serves as a key member of BSO, and this position is critical in supporting development of department financial plans and analysis of variances and performance results in support of DOM's various missions.

Financial Analyst serves as a key member of BSO, performing a wide variety of tasks, including the support of analysis, financial reporting, and dashboard maintenance; variance analysis; fund management; and transactional review. Position understands the complexities of revenue and expense patterns and provides solutions to financial processes to maximize UC resources. Work direction will be received from the Director of Business Analytics & Fiscal Affairs, Associate Director of Fiscal Affairs, and Finance Manager; collaboration with Division Administrators, staff, and faculty, will also be performed.

Financial Analyst has professional skills and with an understanding of industry practices and organizational policies and procedures. Position will demonstrate good judgement in selecting methods and techniques for creatively and appropriately resolving a wide range of issues across diverse assignments in accordance with best practices and policies; show initiative in independently identifying enhancement opportunities with implementation proposals; and evaluate identifiable factors and outcomes to present actionable information and recommendations to various stakeholders.


MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Six (6) years of related experience, education/training, OR a Bachelor's degree in related area plus two years of related experience/training.
  • Working knowledge of finance policies, practices, and systems, preferably in a University environment.
  • Ability to gather reasonably retrievable information to organize, and perform basic financial analysis assignments. Must be able to identify issues; analyze data; develop, recommend, and implement solutions.
  • Proficient ability using spreadsheet and database software for moderately complex financial analysis, fiscal management, and financial reports.

  • Demonstrated ability to effectively present information verbally and in writing clearly and concisely.

  • Intermediate knowledge and understanding of internal control practices and their impact on protecting University resources.


    PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Working knowledge of accounting and internal controls in a university setting.
  • Limited experience with financial management systems (i.e. Oracle) and business intelligence software (i.e. Tableau).
  • Experience in documenting results of reporting procedures, requirements, and reports in an organized fashion both with internal and external stakeholders.


    SPECIAL CONDITIONS

  • Position will be a combination of work-from-home and in-office work.
