Job Overview:

The Development & Communications Manager leads all aspects of resource development, communications and volunteer management activities for the IRC's San Diego, California offices, including locations in San Diego and El Cajon. The specific areas of responsibility and oversight include: donor/funder cultivation & stewardship, grants management, special events, traditional and social media, advocacy and community engagement, and volunteer management as well as reporting and analytics related to these functions. The Development & Communications Manager directly supervises the Development & Communications Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, Community Sponsor Program Manager, and interns/volunteers who may be assisting the unit.As a San Diego senior management leadership team member, the Development & Communications Manager shares responsibility with other program and operations managers for providing effective oversight of all office operations and good stewardship of resources.​

Major Responsibilities:

Resource Development:

· With the input of Executive Director and Finance Director, annually set the office's private fundraising goals (including funds and in-kind donations ~ $1million/year) with the expectation that each year's goals will increase over the previous year;

· With input from the Grants Manager, build an annual development plan to include restricted and unrestricted funds to support organizational priorities and align with strategic action plan;

· As the office's focal point with IRC's Integrated Fundraising Model, coordinate with fundraising teams at IRC Headquarters to include individual donors in their portfolios in local events & program updates and elevate local funding needs and priorities;

· Collaborate with high-value fundraising teams at IRC Headquarters on the cultivation, stewardship and solicitation of corporate engagement, private foundations, and major donors with a regional or national scope to elevate local funding needs with funders;

· Conduct prospect research and lead strong cultivation & stewardship of relationships with foundations, corporations and other philanthropic institutions with local scope;

· Lead strategy and goal setting for annual special events, supervise & support planning & execution of events, and support solicitation of event sponsorships;

· Ensure the timely and accurate input of donor activity in Salesforce, as well as the generation of donor acknowledgements;

· Guarantee coordination between the Grant Manager, Deputy Director, and Program Managers ingrant proposal development and donation solicitation to eliminate cross-solicitation and best reflecting the office's overreaching funding needs;

· Lead the development and submission of specific grant proposals, as requested by the Executive Director;

· Oversee the solicitation, in-processing, and distribution of in-kind goods to support program and office needs;

· Ensure the proper internal and external policies and guidelines are followed in the solicitation, inventory, and distribution of in-kind donations;

· Ensure office follows IRC and IRS policies and laws related to the solicitation, acknowledgment and use of charitable donations.

Communications:

· In collaboration with Development & Communications Coordinator, establish communications plan that includes email, social media, and traditional media to support organizational and fundraising goals and priorities;

· Coordinate with Headquarters Communications and IRC San Diego's Executive Director in responding to media requests;

· Prepare staff and/or clients for interviews, speaking events, and advocacy opportunities;

· Ensure office is in compliance with organizational media and social media policies and in alignment with IRC brand guidelines and writing styles in all public-facing materials and communications;

· Ensure that all external written communications are accurate, professionally written, and donor-centric;

· Responsible for the production of IRC San Diego's annual Impact Report;

· Support the Executive Director in representing the office at meetings & forums and engaging with local elected officials;

· Conduct outreach, networking, and public presentations to recruit and educate potential donors, volunteers and constituents.

Volunteer Management and Community Sponsorship Program Oversite:

· Supervise IRC San Diego's Volunteer Coordinator and Co-Sponsorship Program Manager to ensure annual volunteer placement and Community Sponsorship Program goals are set and met;

· Assure organizational policies and procedures are followed in the recruitment, onboarding, and supervision of volunteers and interns;

· Provide leadership and mentorship on issues related to volunteer management or policies.

General Management Duties:

· Provide direct supervision and oversight of work, including professional development and performance management, to the Development & Communications Coordinator, Volunteer Coordinator, and Community Sponsorship Program Manager;

· Maintain a strong working relationship with program staff for awareness of current programs & activities and resource needs;

· Participate in weekly leadership team meetings and keep Executive Director and leadership team colleagues advised of progress on development initiatives;

· Ensure accurate donation and relationship records are entered in Salesforce CRM and provide reports & analysis to support strategy planning and goal tracking;

· Other tasks as needed and assigned by the Executive Director.

Job Requirements:

· Undergraduate degree required preferably in Communications, Business Administration or a related-field; Graduate Degree preferred;

· Minimum 5 years prior professional experience in Development leadership roles in a nonprofit or social services environment;

· Proven experience with all facets of the role, including fundraising, public relations, special events; donor relations; multi-channel campaigns and appeals and volunteer management;

· Consistent record of building strong donor relationships through cultivation and stewardship that aligns organizational priorities with donor interests and philanthropic goal;

· Demonstrated experience with grant writing and research;

· Experience engaging with private foundations in the San Diego/Southern California/California areas preferred;

· 2+ years prior supervisory experience required;

· Ability to prioritize and navigate with a fast-paced environment, with frequent competing deadlines;

· Self-motivated, goal-driven, and team-oriented;

· Excellent interpersonal communication skills: the ability to communicate effectively and diplomatically with grantors, volunteers, partner agencies, government officials, multi-cultural clients and colleagues on all levels;

· Proficiency in Microsoft Office applications: Word, Excel, Outlook; CRM platforms;

· Experience with Salesforce CRM preferred;

· Outstanding organizational, leadership and team-building skills: the ability to promote collaboration and efficiency;

· Demonstrated ability to work successfully in a multi-cultural environment;

· Access to a reliable vehicle with valid driver license and auto insurance required; must be comfortable with driving agency vehicles, such as minivans;

· Ability to work nontraditional hours including weeknights and weekends as necessary.

Working Environment:

· Standard, professional office environment combined with travel in and around the service delivery area;

· Occasional evening and weekend hours required;

· Partial remote delivery of services while IRC offices are closed due to CV-19.
